Learning To Play Guitar Chords – Top Tips

When you first pick up a guitar the first thing you should do is start learning to play guitar chords, starting with the basic major and minor open chords. The basic open chords are the starting point to almost any song, many bands have made careers from just these simple chords. It’s all to easy to get caught up in trying to learn different tunings and different ways to play chords but I can’t stress enough how important it is to master the basic open chords before moving on.

Once the basics have been mastered then the second thing you should learn should be power chords. Power chords are mainly used in rock music. They are simple to play and like the basic open chords many rock musicians (like Nirvana) have made entire albums with them as the back bone to almost every song.

Top tips when learning chords:

1. Start with basic open chords.

Learn the basic open chords first. Skipping this step can cause problems later on.

2. Then try power chords.

Learn power chords second. Try swapping between the two to get used to changing.

3. Play with other tunings.

Make sure you always play in standard tuning to start with. You can move on to other tunings when you have mastered the basics.

4. Keep your fingers safe.

Use finger ease if you find that the tips of your fingers hurt during playing.

5. Take your time.

Take it slow. Learning to play guitar is a difficult task and takes time so try not to rush yourself to early on.

Remember, learn open first, power second then barre third. After you are comfortable with them then it’s up to you to move on and learn what you want to.
