These models are equipped with electronic pickups to amplify the sound of the instrument and come in solid body, semi-hollow, and hollow body types. Some have some kind of sound holes in them which does allow you to play or practice the instrument but to fully take advantage of the guitar and the electronics in the guitar they usually require the addition of an electric amplifier too. There are many starter packages out there with guitar and amplifier and at really good prices and the quality is quite good considering there are very expensive instruments out there made for the professional in mind.

There they may have many types of acoustic and electric models to try out. Some have separate sound rooms where you can go and make noise and try it out to see if you like it.
