Learning to Play Guitar – Frets and Promises

Learning to Play Guitar – Frets and Promises

Learning to play guitar could possibly be the wisest thing you ever decided to do. But it will not be easy. Whether you aim to be a professional guitarist or a campfire guitar strummer, there will be pitfalls to cross. This article will touch upon a few of the more common bumps on the guitar playing road with the hope that you will benefit from being warned about what lies ahead.

The reason Learning to play guitar can be one of life’s disappointments is that many people do not know how to start. Spending a week or so stumbling through the first chords to “Blackbird” by the Beatles and laboriously picking out the “Iron Man” riff, then putting the guitar away in a cupboard is one of your classic urban tragedies.

If you are interested in just playing the guitar informally at parties or round the campfire, the best course of action is first, to learn what tabs are and how to read them, and second go online and pick tabs for songs that you know and like, and try to play them.

Usually I would not recommend lessons from your local guitar teacher because they are far more expensive than even the best courses on the internet, but if you are not going too deeply into guitar playing, a few lessons will eliminate some of the uncertainty from the first steps in Learning to play guitar.

One of the big issues for almost everybody who has started Learning to play guitar is which song to learn first. Your own preferences in music will help, of course but the best songs to start on are the ones that will impress other people at parties. “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, or “Smoke On The Water”. Something instantly recognizable. The thing with metal is the heavy use of power chords which only need three fingers to play. Twelve bar blues is good – you can learn different lyrics using the same chords.

Another simple solution is to think of albums that you like to play. Are there tracks that have stand-out guitar parts? Write down the names and hunt for the tabs on the internet. Failing that, just look for easy guitar songs. “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd or “Horse With No Name” by America are good ones to start with. Go to about.com for a list of easy songs.

Let us move onto a problem that strikes the learner guitarist who manages to set a practice routine and actually learns two or three chords. Learning to make the changes between chords is one of the loneliest ways in the world to spend your time. Every day you seem to make a little progress, and the next day you always seem to be back to square one. Without an experienced guitar player to guide you, this is the time you could easily lose all hope of learning to play guitar. This is the beginning of the uphill climb that confronts all people who learn a new skill. Swimming, driving, guitar playing, they all need regular practice. If you do not have a friend who can help you with your guitar playing, seek advice from guitar forums or places like Yahoo Answers.

Finally, let us talk about the physical discomfort that can befall new guitar players. One of the first things you should ask an experienced guitarist about is how to hold the guitar. If you do not get it right, you are only going to make Learning to play guitar painful. Then there is the matter of making your fingertips hard. For a week or two, every time you start playing the guitar your left hand fingertips will hurt. Usually just for the first few minutes. This is a process all guitar players go through. Do not try dipping your fingers in stuff that is supposed to make the pain go away, just let it go away by itself.

How to learn to play guitar quickly and easily while having fun?

Question by planegenius: How to learn to play guitar quickly and easily while having fun?
I have wanted to play the guitar all my life. My parents got me a guitar a couple years ago, and some books. I have tried maybe three different forms of lessons, all start off at different places. Where is the best place to start when learning to play? Also, got some money now, any advice on some good software or book (idiot proof) to teach me how to play? I really do want to learn this, I’m just kinda overwhelmed. Any other advice welcome please.

Thanks!

Use cyberfret.com for free online guitar lessons (click on the Beginner Guitar Lessons on the left side of the page).

Buy Teach Yourself Visually Guitar if you’re a visual learner. Good book with simple directions and lots of pictures. Lots of stuff is covered in that book.

It will get frustrating, so be warned.

I also HIGHLY recommend lessons. You can use the book and website as “second teachers” if you will.

If you make the decision to learn to play guitar it means something has suddenly stirred you into action. The ambition of learning to play guitar is no longer a dream. It’s time to take action, today. If you just got given a guitar as a present, you usually don’t want to just allow your new instrument to gather dust in the corner. Now is the time to experience what you can do about learning guitar. Do you believe your local music teacher can show you what you need to know? Or do you think you can learn to play guitar for free on the internet? It would be very good to look into teaching yourself guitar. And not spending money to do it makes it even more enticing

When you embark on learning how to play the guitar you need to have some goals. If you want to learn to play some of Eddy Van Halen’s solos, that’s fine. If you want to fill a spot in a local covers band, that’s alright, too. Maybe you are a surf guitar buff and would like to spend hours in your garage recreating the Dick Dale sound. These are all good goals. They give you a picture in your imagination of you setting your dream into practice

Let’s look at how you are going to learn to play guitar. A guitar teacher can put himself in your shoes and help you to find your way as a learner guitar player or as a potential professional musician. He has been a beginner, he has struggled to learn, and he has had ambitions of success, just like you. There are some great books and DVDs that can show you how to play the guitar, but they can’t stop you and show you if you are doing something wrong.

If you resolve to go ahead and learn guitar without a teacher, you will need a plan. Your plan will involve things like a timeframe to learn chords and tabs. You might set yourself a year to get a repertoire of your favorite songs. You also need a practice schedule

If you are determined to teach yourself to play the guitar, you need to resign yourself to paying for your new guitar skills with time and energy. A simple practice regime is a thirty minute practice session starting with five minutes warming up, practicing scales for five minutes, working on left hand techniques for ten minutes, and then working on a new song or instrumental piece for ten minutes. If you don’t understand what warming up or working on technique mean, you need to do some more research

It is not all that difficult to learn how to play the guitar, but it IS challenging. If you are already an adult with your school and college years behind you, taking on acquiring a new skill is going to be a big business. Making the decision to commence is going to be half the battle. When you start learning how to read music or guitar tablature you will find it’s not hard to do. Spending half an hour a day on guitar practice will be quite an enjoyable way to spend time after you come home from work. Maybe even better than drinking beer. Mmmm . . . guitar practice.

Reading through the practice routine and seeing how the time is allotted you will probably wonder why more time is not given to learning new material. The fact is, the whole process of learning to play the guitar is changing how your body, mind and feelings work. After a year or so playing the guitar you’re a different animal. So you might think the most important part is the song, but what’s important is the whole process and keeping it balanced. So learning to play the guitar is never really free.

How do you learn to play guitar and have fun?

Question by Karissa: How do you learn to play guitar and have fun?
I love to sing and write songs, but to be successful in any way I will need to learn either guitar or piano, and seeing that I already own a guitar, I hope to learn that. I need suggestions, cuz whenever I pick it up I just get frustrated or bored trying to learn chords. I need help!

Best answer:

Answer by guitarpicker56
You have yet to reach that level of self-motivation to excel at the guitar, move beyond the painful fingertips until the calluses arrive, and develop chord knowledge.

Get a book of chords or Hal Leonard’s Guitar Method #1 booklet. Inside are instructions on tuning, chord formation, and basic music theory.

Frustration will sway if you have a definite plan to overcome each stage of playing. Being bored with it tells me you really haven’t the interest to go beyond the effort required to learn the instrument.

You should learn to read music eventually if you really want to become serious. But if you’re just starting to learn and you’re only interested in having fun, it sounds like tablature will do just fine for now.
